Meet Renee

Welcome Renee

I am SUPER excited to share with you all an amazing teacher who will be joining the Papatūānuku studio whānau really soon. This is Renee! She will be taking on my role as purple kaiāwhina teacher while I take some time to look after my baby when she is born soon.

Meeting someone new can be tough, and meeting them during a lockdown is even harder, because we cannot meet face to face. But Renee has tried to help us get to know her a little better and made a quick video to introduce herself to us.

I can't wait for us all to be together in the studio again and for us all to WELCOME Renee into the studio when we get back!

Please watch this short clip and get to know Renee a little more. I am sure you have lots of questions for her. So please leave them in the comment box and she will be able to reply.

Three, two, one blast-off! Can you make a rocket like this?!

At our house, Olivia was inspired to make a rocket after seeing some activities and videos for Papatūānuku kids.

First, they got a really big bottle and used chopsticks to make the stand. However, realised that to fill a 2-litre bottle they would need more vinegar than we had. Andrew and Olivia decided to make a smaller rocket from a salad dressing bottle. This time they used tooth picks for stand, this could be done because the bottle was much smaller. Olivia made a cap for the rocket from paper and decorated it using purple felt pens. She drew a smiley face. Along with making the bottle creation Olivia put baking soda into a piece of toilet paper and Andrew tied it with string. This was to be placed in the rocket before take off along with the vinegar.

Once the rocket was completed Olivia and Andrew took it outside. They had put in the vinegar and all Andrew had to do was quickly pop the parcel of baking soda and the cork into the bottle, give it a shake and off it would fly.

Unfortunately, it did take them 4 attempts, it's a good thing they decided to use the smaller bottle. Watch the video to see how high it went!

Can you create your own and share your videos and pictures.

The Day the Crayons Quit - Read by Nic!

 How lucky are we?!

This term we have two Teaching Interns joining the Papatūānuku Team, Nic and Josh! They were only with us for two days before we went into lockdown, but they are joining us on our group meetings and will be sharing more with us over the next while.

Here is Nic doing a shared reading for us. Make sure you comment to let him know what an amazing job he has done. I am sure he will be taking requests on what to read next!

Our Rocket ship!

I saw a great blog post from Jaxon in our studio and it gave me an idea.

Jaxon used duplo and lego to create his own solar system. I have lots of duplo in my house, so Darcy and I decided to make our own space rockets. I tried to remember all the information about them and their design from our 'Kids in Space' trip and put them on my rocket (Darcy liked mine so much he copied).

Here they are!

Mine is called 'Lockdown2.0'and Darcy's is called 'Number5'.
