Creative Writing

Over the last two weeks in inquiry we have been learning about what plants need to grow and the life cycle of a plant. This week, we imagined we were the plant and wrote about a day in the life of a seed.  The children use picture plants to guide their writing. The children have five goals for their writing that they focus on during the week which they tick off once they think they have achieved this goal. Here is the beginning of our story...

Maths Learning

Today in Maths our problem solving was focused on what we knew about the number 60. With partners, the children represented 60 in as many ways as they could. They then shared with their group. In our group we represented 60 using addition, tallies, counting in 10s and using tens and ones.
Can your child think of any way to represent 60?

In our target group, we looked at teen numbers. In partners, we used tens frames to make teen numbers and then wrote an addition equation to make the number. The children then made teens number independently.
Can your child show you how to use a tens frame to make teen numbers?

Problem solving

Problem solving groups

This term we are focusing on problem solving during math time. This is a new way of learning for us and together we are developing new ways to communicate with each other and share our ideas about the math problem given to us.

Last week in pairs we were asked the question; how many ways can you make the number 25 using materials?

After spending time with our buddy and solving the problem together we moved to our group share. In our group share we use the ABC. Agree, Build and Challenge. Each of us have the opportunity to agree with the answer that has been shared, build on their ideas (add more) or challenge them (because we do not agree with their answer). Using the ABC has helped us share our ideas and the ways we were able to problem solve.

Here are some photos of us working together. Ask the us at home about our problem solving group and what we do.

Do you know how many different ways to make the number 25??
We can show you!!!

What a great start to our new year in Papatūānuku!

This week we are focused on getting to know each other and becoming familiar with our new space. What better way to become familiar with our studio than to learn the story of Rangi and Papatūānuku?!
The children are showing us their understanding by creating some outstanding artwork which includes both Sky Father and Earth Mother and their story.

We will be working on this all week and will be sharing more art from all kaiāwhina groups this week on the blog.
